Types
'Hooks & Horns' has two different installation modes; (1)
full and (2) compact. Full mode will install all graphics and
multi-media files to your hard drive. This provides for better
performance but will require more disk space (min 250 Mbytes).
The compact mode required less hard disk space (min 50 Mbytes)
but must access the CD_ROM drive for much of the level graphics
and multimedia thus resulting in slower performance. Regardless
of the install mode you choose, the CD_ROM must remain in the
drive while you play 'Hooks & Horns'.
Starting
the Game
For the best performance it is recommended that you exit all
other programs while playing 'Hooks & Horns'. The CD-ROM
must reside in the drive in order to play the game. Follow these
steps to begin:
==> double click on the 'Hooks & Horns' shortcut on your
desktop
OR
==> click on 'Start', click on 'Programs', click on 'Hooks_Horns',
click on 'Hooks & Horns'
Playing
the Game
Hunter Profile Info: This is where
the player selects and defines all game preferences. Save/Load
Hunter-
The most recent hunter profile settings are stored in a default
configuration. Because qualifying relates specifically to an
individual hunter it is recommended that following any changes
to your hunter profile information you should save your personalized
settings. This is done by clicking on the 'Save hunter' tab.
Enter the your name as the filename and follow the instructions
to save your settings. To retrieve your settings click on the
"Load hunter' tab, highlight the file with your name and
follow directions to open. Afterwards your personal settings
will be loaded.
Skill
Level-
The three skill levels determine the hunting difficulty. While
hunting, the skill level indirectly determines the score of
the harvest. The more difficult the skill level the greater
the amount of patience that is required to harvest game. The
reward for your increased patience yields higher scoring deer
and turkeys.
Deer
Gear-
Go here to select your firearm, deer calls and scents. Items
on the table and in the room can be selected by clicking on
desired gear. Selected gear is then placed on the 'board'. To
change gear click on the selected gear (on the board) to return
it to the room. All deer gear is selected in this manner.
Turkey
Gear-
Selection process works the same as deer gear. For turkey hunting
the player has a choice of firearm, turkey calls, locator calls,
a hen decoy and camo preference. Click on the camo shirt to
change the current (selected) pattern.
Deer
Hunting Stands-
Go here to select the deer stand (location) you wish to hunt.
There are a six different stand areas available to hunt. Pine
woods, hard woods and grain fields are all areas that can be
hunted. Deer stand availability is based upon your hunting area
access (qualifying) scores. See Hunting Area Access for more
details.
Turkey
Hunting Areas-
Go here to determine whether you wish to hunt Eastern wild turkeys
(eastern range) or Merriam's' wild turkeys. (western range)
Turkey hunting area availability is based upon you your hunting
area access (qualifying) scores. See Hunting Area Access for
more details.
Sound
Recognition-
Windows XP is required to utilize the sound recognition feature.
Sound recognition allows you to use your game calls to communicate
with the animals in the hunting game. (via your microphone)
To use this feature you must select 'enable' in the SRT (Sound
Recognition Technology) panel. The SRT panel is accessible in
the hunter profile panel. The game software will determine the
default recording device and its unlikely that it will ever
have to be changed. There will be defined calling templates
for each of the different types of game calls that are recognized.
The up arrow will allow the player to surf through the list
of available templates.
Hunting
Area Access-
Go here to view your accumulated qualifying points and hunting
areas you are allowed to hunt. The first time you play 'Hooks
& Horns' you be allowed to hunt the 'Basic' hunting areas.
These include; (1)Merriam's' gobblers, (2)Deer- logging road
blind, (3) Deer- wheat field blind. By accumulating points you
will gain access to other hunting areas. Points are accumulated
when a buck is harvested, a gobbler is harvested or when you
shoot a qualifying round of sporting clays. Points are awarded
based on the following;
whitetail
buck 100 - 119 (2 pts) xxxxxxxxxx
gobbler less 1.0 (1 pt)
whitetail buck 120 - 139 (4 pts) xxxxxxxxxx
gobbler 1.00 - 1.24 (3 pts)
whitetail buck 140 - 159 (6 pts) xxxxxxxxxx
gobbler 1.25 - 1.49 (4 pts)
whitetail buck 160 + (10 pts) xxxxxxxxxxxx
gobbler 1.5 + (8 pts)
clays % 50 - 59 (1 pt) xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Eastern gobblers >= 4 accum pts
clays % 60 - 69 (2 pts) xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Deer- pine woods stand >= 6 accum pts
clays % 70 - 79 (3 pts) xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Deer- hardwoods stand >= 8 accum pts
clays % 80 - 89 (4 pts) xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Deer- corn field blind >= 10 accum pts
clays % 90 + (5 pts) xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Deer- soy bean field stand >= 15 accum pts
Sporting
Clays:
Selecting sporting clays will take you to one of two shooting
ranges (selected at random). You must first select a shotgun
(see turkey gear), the shotgun for clays is the same as the
firearm chosen for turkey hunting. When sporting clays is initially
selected, a choice of either 'shoot for fun' or 'shoot to qualify'
will appear. To proceed, one of the options must be selected
(by left clicking). The 'shoot to qualify' option will retain
your score for determining hunting area access. A qualifying
round is based on twenty-five clay launches. The percentage
hit is based on total breaks divided by total launched. If you
exit the round prior to twenty-five launches the percentage
hit will be based on twenty-five launches. 'Shoot for fun' allows
for a practice round where the score does not count and the
number of clays launched are not limited.
Turkey
Hunting:
The turkey hunting selection will take the hunter to either
Idaho for Merriam's gobblers or Georgia for Eastern gobblers
(see 'turkey hunting' in 'hunter profile'). Clicking on the
map icon will display the hunting area, the orange dot indicates
hunter location. Also included on the map are areas frequented
by the turkeys. Clicking the map icon when the map is displayed
will hide the map from view. Calls can be made by simply clicking
on their respective icons. Left click will produce yelps and
right click will produce clucks. If you have selected a decoy
as part of your hunting gear, clicking that icon will place
the decoy in front of your setup. To pick the decoy up either
click the decoy icon again or relocate. If sound recognition
is enabled and functioning the SRT (Sound Recognition Technology)
icon will light up to a bright yellow (otherwise gray). With
your microphone connected to your computer, you can make turkey
calls with your actual calls to interact with the birds. The
navigation icon (far left arrows) allows you to reposition from
one setup to another. The black arrows indicator direction of
travel. The center of the navigation icon will initially be
green. The color will transform to bright orange indicating
the gobbler's interest level and proximity. The more difficult
the skill level, the more challenging it is to call in a gobbler
and the longer the spurs will be. To harvest a gobbler a head/neck
shot is required. Only gobblers are allowed, regardless of skill
level. If a hen is accidentally shot all turkeys in your trophy
room will be deleted and your gobbler and sporting clays qualifying
scores will be reset to zero. If a gobbler is successfully harvested
a 'check card' with score (spur length) will be displayed. Click
on 'lodge' to return to the main lodge.
Deer
Hunting:
Deer hunting will take the hunter to the selected stand (see
'deer hunting' in 'hunter profile'). As with turkey hunting,
clicking on the map icon will display the hunting area, the
orange dot indicates current stand location. Clicking the map
icon when the map is displayed will hide the map from view.
If selected, click on the scent bottles to dispense. To make
a deer call left click on the call icon. Grunting at intervals
will increase your odds of seeing bucks. This call can also
be used to make deer stop walking which increases the odds of
making a good shot. Using the doe bleat will attract both small
bucks and does and performs equally well as the grunt when it
comes to stopping deer. Clicking the 'buck head' icon on the
far left will cause a deer to move into the scene immediately.
However, if you 'cheat' and harvest a buck his score cannot
be used for qualifying and no entry will be made in the trophy
room. If sound recognition is enabled and functioning the SRT
(Sound Recognition Technology) icon will light up to a bright
yellow (otherwise gray). With your microphone connected to your
computer, you can interact with the deer using your actual calls.
The more difficult the skill level, the more patience that is
required to see big bucks. To harvest a whitetail a chest shot
is required, any other shot placement will result in a miss.
The only skill level in which does can be legally harvested
is the 'easy' level. If a doe is taken illegally then all deer
in your trophy room will be deleted and your whitetail and sporting
clays qualifying scores will be reset to zero. If a whitetail
is successfully harvested a 'check card' with score (B&C)
will be displayed. Click on 'lodge' to return to the main lodge.
Trophies:
Click on the 'trophies' tab on the main lodge screen. The top
three whitetail deer scores are stored in the trophy room. Score
is based on the B&C score of the buck as seen on the check
card following harvest. For gobblers, the top five harvests
are stored. Score is based on spur length and both sub-species
are combined in the listings (Merriam's indicated by buff tip
tail feather).
SRT
Troubleshooting:
For sound recognition to work properly three things are required.
First, you must go into Hunter Profile then SRT setup to enable
sound recognition. Make sure that a template has been defined
for each of the call types. The second requirement is that a
working microphone is connected properly to your computer. While
hunting the SRT logo will highlight in bright yellow indicating
that the sound recognition has been enabled properly. However,
this does not test for a properly connected and functioning
microphone. This can be tested by selecting the SRT Troubleshooting
tab on the main lodge panel. When selected, a utility is launched
which will allow you to test record a sound. If you can successfully
record then your microphone is configured properly.
